Nuha Mansi

Nuha is married and has ten children, only her daughter completed university level education. Nuha herself only completed elementary school. She always loved art and creating pretty decorations.  Nuha Mansi began thinking about her project when she saw a gift; a piece of embroidery framed with etched copper.  She carefully took the gift apart and realized she had the talent, skill and will to create similar handicrafts. She began her micro project 14 yeas ago; engraving copper for frames, office supplies, furniture and other knickknacks. She would save up change from her household allowance and buy pieces of copper, material and thread.

In 2005, Nuha came to Asala for a loan.  She was granted a loan of USD $2,000, which she used to purchase the raw materials necessary to expand her project.  She made a reputation for herself and her work became known for its beauty and quality.  Again, in 2007, Nuha took a loan for USD $4,000 and further developed her project.  Her husband, who is unemployed due to the difficult economic situation, began helping her.  Soon, her son joined in the micro project. Nuha says that she does most of this intricate and time consuming work late at night, so that her concentration is not divided between her family and her project. Further, Nuha has yet to open a shop for her project and does most of her work on the landing of her home's stairwell.

Nuha uses other business owners to market her products. Very often, her work is displayed at exhibitions and trade centers. This method has proven successful, and she insists that it is not necessary to open a shop specifically to display her products. ‘My priority is ensuring income for my family, not making my name famous!
